Sunday May 8th 2005 was the 60th Anniversary of the end of World War II in Europe. For the group from 207 Squadron RAF Association the day began when we arrived at Meeuwen for coffee in the Town Hall, to meet our hosts from the Town Council and Mr Johannes Bosmans who had worked together with Kevin Mapley, Secretary of 207 Squadron RAF Association on the arrangements for the day and the Corless crew memorial. Members Eddie Chapman and Frank R Haslam represented the few remaining 207 Squadron survivors of the Wesseling Raid. In our group were: Mrs Yvonne Gray & Mrs Ferne Melvin, sisters of Sgt James Ivan Magoffin, kia June 21/22 1944 in the Corless crew Mrs Norah Alkins (from Canada) sister of F/O Bruce Somers RCAF, Bomb Aimer, kia June 21/22 1944 in the Corless crew James Alkins & William Alkins (from Canada) nephews of F/O Bruce Somers

We met the 33 members of the de Casagrande family who had travelled to be present - Sgt Raphael de Casagrande was the navigator in the Corless crew. We were also joined by Joe English of 625 Sqn, brother in law of Sgt Joe Mireault, Air Gunner in the Corless crew, and his son Allen, who had been in Holland as part of a Canadian veterans' tour.

We are in touch with the family of Sgt Ken Barnes - his sister Mrs Sheila Christie had a Mass said for Ken and his fellow crew members at the Roman Catholic Church of the Sacred Heart & St Margaret Mary, Dereham, Norfolk at 11am on May 8th, the same morning as the service was taking place in Meeuwen. Sheila provided the Barnes family wreath laid at Meeuwen on their behalf by Joe English.

From Eindhoven we were pleased to see Honorary Members Kees and Ans Rijken, and by Friend members Danny Vanstraelen from Niel-bij-As and Leon Reumers from Genk, and their wives, and by Danny's parents Andre and Gaby. Gaby is the daughter of Gerard and Helena Delsaer-Geurts, helpers of Sgt Frank R Haslam, a 207 Sqn evader missing on the Wesseling Raid.

The Governor of the Province of Limburg was present, together with the Mayor and members of the Council of Meeuwen-Gruitrode, officers of the RBAF, Lt Col Duggan and Lt Col Lorenz from SHAPE representing the Canadian Air Force. Mrs Ghislaine Walkden of the RAFA Belgian Branch represented the British Embassy and RAFA. The Belgian SAS (Special Air Service), the Circle of Friends of the para commando's Limburg Branch and the Secret Army Meeuwen Branch were also represented.

The service was celebrated by Father Louis Maus. The choir Medua was conducted by Mrs Ria Daemen.

Priest: Mevrouw de Gouverneur, geachte gasten uit Canada en Groot Brittannie en vertegenwoordigers van hun ambassadeurs en strijdkrachten in Belgie, dames en heren. Namens de parochie van Meeuwen heet ik u van harte welkom. Ik ben blij dat u naar deze kerk bent gekomen om dankbaar deze gesneuvelde piloten te herdenken en te bidden. Madam Governor, dear guests from Canada and Great Britain and honourable representatives of their ambassadors and forces in Belgium, ladies and gentlemen. On behalf of the parish of Meeuwen I give you a hearty welcome. I'm glad that you have come to this church to gratefully commemorate those airmen killed in action more than 60 years ago and to pray, in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. Reader: Lord, we desire to thank Thee for the devotion unto death of the seven airmen of the Lancaster ME683 who fell here at Meeuwen and for all the willing sacrifices made in Thy cause. Grant , O Lord, to all who have been preserved and all who have enjoyed peace and freedom during the past sixty years, a due sense of all Thy mercies, that we may be unfeignedly thankful, and serve Thee faithfully all the days of our life. Let us acknowledge that we have sometimes fallen short of our high calling of being God's tools to establish and maintain peace all over the world.

R: O Lord, we draw near unto Thee, acknowledging our unworthiness, and we beseech Thee that the moments we showed little regard or gratitude for our liberators and the sacrifices of so many airmen of the Allied Forces may be pardoned, through the precious Blood of Thy dear Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. O Heer, wij komen naar U toe en wij erkennen onze zwakheid. Wij betreuren de momenten in ons leven dat wij te weinig respect en dankbaarheid betoonden voor onze bevrijders en het offer van zovele piloten van de Geallieerde strijdkrachten. LESSON (Lezing)

R: Joshua's charge to the people at the end of a campaign reminds us once again that in this time of long-lasting peace we must not turn. to other gods. Let us not endanger the peace in our own heart and among the peoples our earth by indifference, intolerance and injustice resulting from a craving for desire,power and possession.

For the Lord our God, He! it is that brought us up and our fathers out of the land of Egypt, from the house of bondage, and which did these great signs in our sight, and preserved us in all the way wherein we went, and among all the people through wham we passed.

De Heer is onze God. Hij heeft ons en onze voorouders uit Egypte, dat slavenoord, gehaald. Voor onze ogen heeft hij die machtige wonderen gedaan. We trokken dwars door het gebied van andere volkeren, maar hij heeft ons beschermd, waar we ook gingen.

And the Lord drove out from before us all the people, even the Amorites which dwelt in the land: therefore will we also serve the Lord for He is our God.

Hij verjoeg al die volken, net als de Amorieten, de bewoners van dit land. Ook wij zullen de Heer vereren. Hij is onze God!'

P: Joannes wertelt ons hoe Jezus bad voar zijn leerlingen. Jezus verlangt ernaar terug te keren in de heerlijkheid van zijn hemelse Vader aan het einde van zijn zending hier op aarde.

John tells us how Jesus prayed for his disciples. Jesus desires to return into the Glory of his heavenly Father at the end of his mission on earth.

R: Lord, remember these seven airmen of the Lancaster ME683, who counted not the price of their sacrifice. Give us similar strength to accomplish our daily mission, which is to love and to be merciful and to make peace.

Heer, herinner u deze zeven piloten van de Lancaster ME 683. Voor hen telde de prijs van hun opoffering niet. Geef ons dezelfde kracht om ook onze dagelijkse opdracht te vervullen, namelijk elkaar fief te hebben, elkaar te vergeven en vrede te sluiten.
